The history of the navy in Sweetwater dates back to 1861. The first steamboats arrived in the town in 1869 and began ferrying passengers and freight between the ports of Galveston and Houston. In 1932, Sweetwater joined the Texas Coast Guard as a port on the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, Navy ships have been parked at various points along Sweetwater's waterfront for years – including right now off State Street – enjoying some beautiful sunsets while also providing access to local businesses and residents. Today, there are three active navy ships moored in Sweetwater: USS Enterprise (CVN-65), USS Constitution (CVN-77) and USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-41). These warships are used for training purposes only; they do not carry any munitions or military equipment. All three vessels were built in 1978, 1981 and 1984 respectively, making them among the newest members of the United States Navy. Theodore Roosevelt is one of only two American presidents to serve as a commander in chief of both an aircraft carrier squadron (CVN-72) and an amphibious landing force (ASLIFT). He was also part of Operation Neptune’s Spear during World War II, which led to Japan’s surrender. The Enterprise is named after President Roosevelt’s great grandfather who served as Commodore John Farragut on his flagship USS Constitution duringthe Civil War period. The Constitution was lost at sea off Cape Hatteras Island on April 12th 1865, but her remains were found more than fifty years later by sailors aboard USS Dolphin (CG-2) while operating off North Carolina's Outer Banks During World War II she served as flagship for Admiral Ernest J Smith Jr., Commander Fleet Air Task Force Three Hundred Seventy Four
