Sweetwater was founded in 1845 by colonists from what is now Arkansas as an unincorporated community named Brownsville. A post office called Sweetwater was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it closed on November 15, 1961. The community name may be derived from "sweet water" (a term for brackish water), because of its location near a creek that emptied into the Trinity River. The town was renamed Sweetwater after Major General Jesse J. Ewell's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 following his successful campaign against Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Virginia City, Nevada Territory. In 1880, Sweetwater became the county seat after most of Haskell County were divided between Starr and McLennan counties during the Texas Revolution; however, this change did not take effect until 1893 when Haskell County was re-established as part of Ulysses S. Grant's presidential constituency within Texas.. In 1907, sweetened milk began to be sold at local grocery stores throughout the area under the brand name "Milk-A-Matic". On October 5th 1909 two men named Harry Wirth and John Molnar opened Wirth's Store #2 located just down Main Street from homesteads belonging to settlers Tom Hinton and Fannie McGee Smithson with produce grown on their farm adjacent to their store; Milka tapir semen from Wichita State University had been delivered to them by train through San Antonio prior to shipment to McKinney for breeding purposes only one year earlier (1908). That same year Wirth & Molnar also started selling ice cream which continued until 1957 when they retired due to changes in tastes among Texans.. In 1902, a group of businessmen pooled money and bought land east of town for a cotton gin and other commercial purposes. The name "Sweetwater" was first used for this new community. In 1906, William Clements became mayor of Sweetwater and served until 1911 when he ran for statewide office as a Democrat against Governor Hugh White. On November 3rd elections were held with only 8 voting precincts in Webb County due to an outbreak of Spanish flu that swept across the United States soon after that year’s presidential election results were announced. Sweetwater residents who had registered to vote by mail cast ballots early because they knew there would not be enough polling places open in time for today’s election day registration deadlines set by state law; however, all but one such voter turnout (in Horseshoe Valley) came within 2 percent of expectations according to county officials at the time.[1] Incidentally, it should be noted that both incumbentGov.Whiteand former Lt.-Gov.(now Sen.) John Connally were also running for re-election as Texans at this point; neither candidate could really benefit from high voter turnout given their popularity outside of Webb County[2]. Ultimately Clements won reelection by just over 1 percentage point even though he finished second behind Gov./Lt.-Gov.(now Sen.)
