Sweetwater is a small town located in Comanche County, Texas. The population was 748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sweetwater was established in 1879 by some settlers who had moved from nearby Waco. The town has since grown to include a shopping mall, schools, churches, and a few businesses. The town's name may come from the sweet water that used to be available near its original site. A post office was opened in Sweetwater on July 1, 1880, and served until it closed on June 24, 1893. In 1895, a school opened in Sweetwater which lasted until it burned down in 1926. A new school was built and served as the town's primary educational institution until 1959 when it also burned down. When Wichita Falls became an independent city in 1907, Sweetwater lost its municipal status but retained its ZIP code (73812). In 1945-46 there were heavy flooding events that destroyed many homes and businesses within the limits of Wichita Falls proper; howeverSweetwater escaped major damage because it had been annexed into Wichita Falls by then-County Judge John Lubbock during his time as Mayor of Wichita Falls. In 1960-61 a new high school was constructed adjacent to what is now the Walmart Supercenter complex east of I-35W just south of US 287/287A about two miles west of downtown Wichita Falls proper (the old High School property & lot are still extant). This new school served grades 9 through 12 for 43 years before being replaced by Southwestern Junior College which opened its doors on September 1st 1998 after serving as an interim alternative forSweetWater Community High School from 1985-1998 when HWCHS vacated their building due to budget cuts brought on by City Manager Rick Lobdell following HISD’s purchase of Sam Houston State University’s campus east of I-35W). Southwestern JuniorCollege closed its doors effective September 15th 2002 citing financial reasons although portions thereof have been preserved as part of various government buildings located along US 287/287A including former Walmart Supercenter complex). On October 3rd 2002 voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation into neighboring Tyler County pursuant to Section 2(a) (1)of the Texas Constitution providing for such annexation if Tyler County failed “to provide adequate education or services” to residents within its boundaries - this annexation did not take place because Tyler County never met those criteria.).

In 1870, James Bigham founded the town located just east of present day Midland on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. This community thrived until 1875 when a flood destroyed most of its buildings and homes leaving only a few remaining structures standing today including Sweetwater's courthouse which still stands today as part of Midland Historic District."
