The Sweetwater Army Depot's history stretches back to 1886. It was founded on the east side of town, just north of the San Antonio River. The depot served as a base for the Texas Rangers and later the American Legion. In 1933, it became the site of World War II's largest air-drop of troops in history when America delivered more than 11,000 soldiers and supplies to France via airlift. In 1957, Sweetwater became home to one of Texas' first high school football teams. In 1966, it was renamed Fort Bliss after General William Westmoreland, who served as Commander in Chief during Vietnam and later was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Sweetwater is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,658 at the 2010 census. The village of Sweetwater is located within the town limits. The settlement of Sweetwater was founded in 1879 by citizens of Fredericksburg, Virginia and began operations as a stagecoach stop on the Red River. A post office was established in Sweetwater on November 17, 1879, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 6, 1907. In 1903, the first school opened in Sweetwater and became an all-girls institution before being closed in 1959. The present day elementary school (now known as "Sweetwater Intermediate School") first opened its doors to students on September 11, 1962. In 1901 Wacoal citizen John Tuggle donated land to sweet water for a community center and library which would be open to all residents of Hudspeth County free of charge. On October 15th 1904 Mayor Hezekiah Beeman dedicated Steele's Store building at Main Street and Elm Street in honor of James Steele who had served as mayor from 1889-1894. In 1907 after years of discussion local citizens approved a resolution asking the US Congress for authorization to build a dam across Red River which would create Lake Hudson below so that Sweetwater could become an agricultural center with irrigation water available to farmers near by while also providing power for industry along with jobs for local residents who built new homes around the lake including Steele's Store which continued to operate until it burned down in 1951 creating what is now called “Old Steele” Park today just east of Main Street between Elm & Hwy 290 where locals still play ball every Saturday morning from dawn until dusk! Sweetwater is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was Isaac Hargrave in 1827. He built a cabin on the banks of the Trinity River and named it Hargrave's Landing. A post office was established at Sweetwater in 1834, and the town name was changed to Sweetwater in 1848 when a railroad depot was built there. The first settlers were Methodist Episcopalians from North Carolina who came for wagon trains carrying goods to market. In 1850, Johnnie Grimes opened up Grimes' Store on Main Street which became one of the most important businesses in Sweetwater until it closed its doors in 1907. In 1909, James Klineberger arrived from Kansas City with his family and set up a farm west of town on what is now known as Klineberger Road. At that time only two miles wide and one mile long, Sweetwater consisted of just forty homes or farms totaling over . Sweetwater is a city in San Antonio, Texas, United States. The population was 121,852 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Texas and the third-largest city in San Antonio County. Sweetwater was founded by James Bowie on May 21, 1836 as a small frontier town named for Mount Vernon. In 1847, the site of Sweetwater was purchased from David Waddell by Colonel John Houstoun for $1,000 payable within 10 days. The first store opened in 1850 and it became known as "The merchants' mart". Sweetwater grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Brazos River between Houston and San Antonio. In 1870, sweet water developed into an agricultural center with over 100 farms supplying goods to both Houston and Austin.
