Sulphur Springs is a small town in southeastern Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sulphur Springs-Swisher County Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Sulphur Springs area was settled by Texans in the late 1800s. In 1907, a post office called Sulphur Springs was established, and remained open until it was closed in 1951. The first store in Sulphur Springs opened on July 3, 1907. In 1916, the Sulphur Springs School District was organized and became one of the largest school districts in Texas. In 1945, when President Harry S Truman visited Sulphur Springs for an agricultural fair, he made his famous pronouncement that "the only way to do great things is to be motivated by something larger than yourself". This remark has been immortalized as Truman's slogan: "You can't buy happiness but you can buy opportunity." In 1957, after years of planning and construction, Interstate 10 was built through Sulphur Springs. A new type of bean called “Robusta” was developed by Antonio Biondi while working at an Italian plantation near present day Jakarta in 1848; however, this type of bean was not adopted by other companies because it was too heavy and expensive to produce commercially. In 1912–13, Dutchman Hendrik Vermogensrust bought a small percentage of all the registered production capacity of Nestle SA for $3 million (equivalent to about US$180 million at current prices). The Sulphur Springs Manufacturing Company was founded in 1906 and produced farm products such as cotton, hay, oats, and flour until it merged with the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1951. In 1969, Sulphur Springs became a city. The population was 6,558 at the 2010 census.

In 1907, the Sulphur Springs Independent School District was created and Sulphur Springs Elementary School was built in 1911. The population of Sulphur Springs increased from 592 residents in 1865 to 3,035 residents in 1910. In 1924, the Sulphur Springs post office closed and the town became a ghost town due to its lack of commerce. The last resident died on October 1, 1951
