Sugar Land, Texas is a city in south-central Texas and the seat of Harris County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 176,711. The name Sugar Land comes from Houston's sugar plantations that used to produce cane for shipment to Europe. In 1836, Sam Houston was named its first mayor. The first post office in Sugar Land was established in 1837. It would later be renamed Springtown and incorporated as a city in 1907. The current mayor is Ron Nirenberg with a term starting on January 1st 2020. The history of Sugar Land can be traced back to when it was part of the Spanish Empire in what is now Texas. The area that now makes up Sugar Land was originally called San Jacinto de las Flores because it was near an important sugar plantation where some Brazos River Indians were working on building Missions Santa Anna and San Fernando Rey de España (today's Austin). When Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, they claimed all of Texas except for what are now Sugar Land and Houston County - which remained under Spanish control until after Mexicanindependence. By 1830, large numbers of Texans had come east to escape economic hardship during the Panic of 1830–31, including many who became farmers or traders along the Brazos River region around Houston/Springtown/New Braunfels (the future Dallas). This influx led to speculation about potential towns on or near Galveston Bayou due to their location at strategic points between river mouths; this included Springtown on creeks flowing out into Galveston Bayou, New Braunfels upstream from downtownHouston and Springtown downstream from Corpus Christi (later Austin), both located within present-day Montgomery County but claimed by Mexico as part of Alvarado County until 1903 when it became part of Harris County following Republication of Texas over Mexican objections Texans decided that they wanted their own town – one they could call home – so they voted on April 12th 1837 to incorporate as a town named after Sam Houston’s old mentor General James Kenedy “Jimmie” Jones, also known as “Old Santiago” because he helped lead Santa Anna’s defense against Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill fourteen years earlier! In 1836, the area that is now Sugar Land was part of Texas. The first settler in what is now Sugar Land was James Hogg. He founded a small farm near present-day Houston in 1837. In 1840, Hogg and his wife Mandy moved to what is now Baytown and started a grocery store. The first post office in Sugar Land was established in 1843. By 1851, sugar cane had been grown here and the town became known as "Sugar Loaf." By 1865, it had become an incorporated city with a population of 508 people. In 1870, the Texas Railroad Company built a line from Houston to Sugar Land and began marketing sugar here. This led to more development around the town center and made it more popular as a tourist destination.
