The navy has a long and proud history in Sugar Land. The city was founded on May 5, 1847 by General Sam Houston as the capital of Texas. Over time, the navy grew into one of the largest and most powerful organizations in Texas. The navy first arrived in Sweetwater Bayou on December 1, 1861 when Confederate forces sailed up the bayou to blockade the port city of Houston. Lieutenant Commander John D. Sloat ordered his ship, USS Constitution, to fire upon Confederate ships anchored in Sweetwater Bayou. This action helped prevent Confederate forces from entering Houston and began America’s first open battle against a foreign power at sea. In 1865, Captain James Atherton commanded USS Constitution during her voyage from Havana to Galveston carrying supplies for American troops fighting in Mexico City. On November 14th, she ran aground off Point Comfort Beach while attempting to return home with reinforcements after disembarking 1600 Marines and sailors at Corpus Christi Ferry Landing. Atherton refused orders to abandon his ship and fought valiantly against overwhelming Mexican military opposition until he was forced to surrender his vessel and all crew members including himself were taken prisoner by Mexican forces. This event is considered one of the greatest naval achievements of any country during World War II. During World War II, Navy personnel played an essential role throughout much of Texas; they provided security at ports along the entire coast from Corpus Christi northward through Lubbock down into Louisiana before finally arriving at their final destination – Pearl Harbor – just weeks before Japan bombed Pearl Harbor killing over 400 Americans aboard USS Arizona (CVE-21). As part of this campaign Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz called for an all out assault against Japanese positions near Midway Island which would result in what is now known as Operation “Midway” or “the bloodiest day in American naval history” Navy personnel continued their important roles during peacetime too: In 1975 Rear Admiral Harry Szekely became Commandant United States Naval Academy when President Gerald Ford appointed him that year following the resignation of Vice Admiral Thomas Moorer who had been nominated by Nixon due to allegations that he had sexually harassed female students In 1978 Rear Admiral James Kapp took command when Commodore William Halsey retired after 36 years service as USNS San Antonio (LST-653) unit commander). He served until 1991 when Rear Admiral Burton Waddell assumed command after Commodore Ricketts departed for assignment elsewhere within USNORTHCOM Finally since 2003 Rear Adm.(Ret.) Jeffery Stockman has led USNAO with increased autonomy functioning as its 9thCommandant

The history of Sugar Land, Texas goes back to the days when it was a small cattle and cotton town. In 1836, the area became part of Mexico and during that time, sugarcane was an important crop. The first sugar refinery was built in this town in 1855, and by 1893, it had become one of the leading sugar-producing areas in the United States. In 1912, Sugar Land became its own city and has been growing ever since. It is now a major cultural center for the region and home to some of the most popular tourist attractions in Texas. The city has also played a significant role in its local economy, with several high- profile businesses existing here including Abbott Laboratories and Waco Oil Company.
Sugar Land is a city in Texas, the most populous of the U.S.–Mexico border states. It is located on the Gulf Coast of Texas and straddles both banks of the Brazos River. The population was 283,814 as of 2010[1] and is the sixth-largest city in Texas.[2] The area that now Sugar Land was first settled by Texans in 1836 as part of General Sam Houston's effort to secure independence from Mexico. The town name originated with its natural resources: sugar cane and other crops. After Mexican forces captured Houston's army at San Jacinto (1836), they burned down much of what remained of Houston's original settlement, including Sugar Land, to prevent it from falling into Mexican hands. In 1837, Antonio López de Santa Anna appointed José María Morelos commander general of Texcoco Province in what became Mexico City; Santa Anna moved his headquarters there from Málaga, Spain. As a result, most Texans who had fled Houston returned home to establish new settlements along the coast south of Galveston Bay. In 1838, John Denton founded Denton County and named it for himself – after his brother-in-law James Fenton (1795–1868), an American merchant who had helped organize Texas resistance to Mexican rule during the Coahuila Campaign (1835–1846). By 1840, sugar plantations were flourishing around Whatcom County east of Houston; control over these lands passed through various ownership changes until 1845 when Baylor College bought them from James Fenton’s heirs for $10 per acre ($72 per kilometer).[3][4] At this time one-third or more of all slave cotton grown in America came from British Guiana.[5][6] A local mill owner named George665 Brown built a gristmill on Buffalo Bayou before 1850,[7] which began grinding corn for livestock and later supplied flour for local breadbaking businesses such as Butterworth’s Bakery and Eastman’s Brewery[8].
