The Texas National Guard is a reserve force of the United States of America. It was first organized on November 16, 1861, by Governor John F. Kennedy as the 12th Infantry Regiment "Texas", which was then redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment "Texas". On October 14, 1935, the state militia was elevated to the status of a regiment and redesignated as the 5th Texas National Guard Regiment. The 5th Texas National Guard Regimental Headquarters and Museum is located in Austin. On May 18, 1957, elements of the 2nd Battalion (Mechanized) Texas National Guard were ordered to active duty following President Dwight Eisenhower's announcement that Korea would be invaded at any time by Communist forces. The battalion served in South Korea until its withdrawal on July 15, 1957. In 1959-1960 elements of 2nd Battalion (Mechanized) TXNG were mobilized for service in Cuba under Project Rotoero following an order from Cuban president Fulgencio Batista. These troops served for five months and returned home after completing their mission without combat or fatalities.

Sugar Land, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Harris County. The population was 546,711 as of 2017[2] and it is the most populous city in Texas. It lies in the southern part of Houston metropolitan area, making it one of the two largest cities in that area. Sugar Land is also located withinHouston–the second-largest metropolitan area in Texas with over 2 million people[3]. The history of Sugar Land can be traced back to 1836 when General Sam Houston decided to open up land west of The Woodlands for sugar plantations. The first sugar plantation was founded on what is now known as Main Street (now US 90) by John Swayne and James Dickey, who named their plantation "Sugar Land" after the sugarcane found there. In 1839, Andrew Carnegie bought some land nearpresent-Daytona Beach from Swayne and Dickey and developed it into a town called Carnegieville which he renamed Carnegie City after his brother-in-law's steel manufacturing company.[4][5] In 1845 another developer named Alfred Pemberton purchased 1,000 acres (500 ha) around present-day downtown SugarLand from Samuel Laird Johnston for $2 per acre ($10 per ha).[6] By 1850s, many small towns had been established around Sugarland; these included Galveston (then called Brazoria), Katy (now Killeen), Friendswood (now Forest Park), Dickinson (later Eagle Pass), and Galveston Heights (now part of Houston). In 1861 Confederate officer Edwin Pickett attacked a Union military camp at Clear Lake while under orders from Colonel Robert Ewell to attack any Union forces encountered along the Gulf Coast,[7][8][9] leading to Pickett's capture and trial at Fort Worth Federal Court House on May 9th Armored Infantry Regiment Captain JWG Brown led an unsuccessful cavalry charge that resulted in only one man killed,[10][11]Pickett being paroled without trial on June 10th 1865 after spending four years as a Confederate Prisonerof War at Libby Prison outside Richmond Virginia until his escape on November 3rd 1865 aboard CSS Savannah[12], later becoming an American citizen. As all Confederate officers were given amnesty by Ulysses S Grant upon his inauguration as President on January 20th 1868 following Appomattox Court Martial rules,[13],Pickett became one of Reconstruction's most celebrated heroes.[14] He died suddenly at age 58 less than three months after becoming president due to complications from leukemia on December 12th1868 in Washington D.C., leaving behind three wives: Lillie Belle Robertson; former First Lady Lucy Hayes Marshall; plus six children including Sam Houston II who succeeded him as Governor of Texas
The National Guard was established in 1792 as an emergency militia to support the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The first units were raised in New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The Guard's role expanded during the war and it was officially organized as a corps of infantry on September 15, 1795. During the War of 1812, the Guard served in Canada and been called into service for several months. After the war ended, many Guardsmen traveled to Europe to serve in Napoleon's army where they gained experience in artillery and cavalry fighting. In 1826, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating a National Guard system under which each state had a governor who appointed members to the guard companies from among its citizens subject to recall at any time by popular vote or impeachment if their term expired without notice. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded America and threatened Washington D.C., President Abraham Lincoln called up all available national guardsmen from across the Union for purposes of defending Baltimore against Confederate forces. The NationalGuard played a major role in helping preserve Lincoln's presidency and helped win the battle for Gettysburg over three days that summer ultimately resulting in more than 150 dead Americans includingincoln himself. During World War II, over 50% of men drafted into military service became members of national guard units within 2 years after enlistment; this percentage increased dramatically after Pearl Harbor with over 90% becoming soldiers within 3 months after being inducted into service (Goudreau). With so many soldiers enlisted into military service during World War II there was an need for gifts such as uniforms, equipment or even just small items like medals to commemorate these servicemen/women- especially since most people did not receive proper recognition for their bravery or sacrifice (Henderson).
