The USS Constitution Museum is located on the old San Antonio Shipyards where she was built. The USS Constitution was donation from the citizens of Stephenville in 1847. She served as a flagship of Commodore John Rodgers during the Mexican-American War. She later served during World War II as part of Admiral Chester Nimitz’s Pacific Fleet. After her war service she became part of the US Navy Memorial Fleet and still resides at sea today. Her original crew includes many sailors who are buried at sea with her including James Fenton, an American Revolutionary War veteran and namesake to Fort Fenton which is located near Stephenville. Many other warships have been donated by the citizens of Stephenville over time such as HMCS Athabasca (1953), HMCS Regina (1984), KHSDLUSSWEGLICHTERKHANFELD (2001) and more recently HMS Gloucester (2015). Naval ceremonies were also held in honor of these vessels when they were dedicated or added to our navy fleet list. These events include lunches with admirals and representatives from various navies around the world, displays of artifacts from each vessel, discussions about naval warfare, etcetera. It seems that this city has always had a love/hate relationship with their navy! We can appreciate their dedication but we can also argue about their necessity! In any case, we are grateful for all that they have done for us!
