The town is home to two roasters, Peet’s Coffee & Tea and Java Junction Coffee, as well as one supply store. The name “Stephenville” comes from John Stephen who located the first commercial roastery in the community in 1978. Today, Peet’s Coffee & Tea and Java Junction Coffee are both long-term residents of Stephenville. These businesses have helped shape the local economy by providing jobs and patronage to local businesses. The early days of coffee in Stephenville were a time of great innovation. Coffee was first cultivated in the area by Native Americans and Spaniards, and it wasn't until the late 18th century that coffee became an important factor in the local economy. The first European to bring coffee to Stephenville was José de la Cruz, who arrived in 1781. Over time, other Europeans followed suit, giving Stephenville its nickname of "Cup of Spain." By 1802, Coffee Plantation had been founded by Josefina Garrido and Fernando de la Garza. In 1805-1807, Spanish Commodore James Fenton discovered oil offshore in what is now Texas and decided to explore it for potential commercial purposes. He sent a team led by Francisco de Miranda to investigate the potential resources at sea. They found oil but did not exploit it because they didn't have enough money to do so. However, they did find coffee seeds on shore which gave them the idea of cultivating this valuable crop inland instead. The first beans were grown at Coffee Plantation in 1810 and started being traded for cash with Mexico City. By 1830, Coffee Plantation had become one of the largest plantations in Texas with over 1,000 acres producing beans. It was during this period that Antonio Blanco y Pavón began production at Coffee Plantation as well as starting up various businesses such as grocery stores and churches among others. In 1865-1866 Blanco y Pavón built a new structure known as La Casa Blanca located on what is now Main Street in Stephenville which served as a social center for the community while he continued production at Coffee Plantation.. During World War II (1939-1945), many men from nearby towns volunteered their services and worked on munitions plants or landed behind enemy lines to help win the war against Axis Germany. Stephenville is a town in Stephenville County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Abilene-Killeen-Richardson, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1867 by father and son John and James Robertson. The first post office was established in 1868. The name of the town was changed to Stephenville in 1896 after General Stephen Austin's visit to the area. The post office closed on July 24, 1951. In 1903, a sawmill opened in Stephenville and quickly became one of the most important producers of lumber in the region. In 1911, an oil well was discovered near Stephenville and production began soon afterwards. By 1920, oil had become an important factor in the economy of Stephenville and by 1930 it accounted for over 50% of all local commerce. In 1940, Standard Oil Company merged with Texaco Corporation to form American Petroleum Corporation which led to increased production at the mill as well as new industry development such as refineries and gas stations nearby that helped make up for lost production from World War II efforts elsewhere within America due to cutbacks at military installations abroad. With this increase came increased housing prices along with strong job growth throughout much of the 20th century until 1949 when Output peaked then declined precipitously due largely to global recession which impacted many other parts of America including South Texas even harder than Stephenville did; however starting around 1979 things started slowly turning around with steady job growth (+7%) until 2002 whenemplacing modest declines (-3%). However during 2004-2006 there were large gains (+10%) but again since 2007 there has been little or no real progress despite numerous appearances by Mayor “Tex” Hargrave According to 2000 Census estimates (pdf), there are 2,391 people living in StephensVILLE As stated above StephensVILLE is composed mostly white while black residents make up just 3% or so There have been no major changes since 2000 census estimates though some slight increases may be expected given increasing population sizes

The Stephens family operated a ranch here for many years before selling it to James Bowie in 1907. Bowie built the Stephenville Hotel and other businesses around the area. In 1926, he sold the town to Harry Laughlin, who made it his home until his death in 1959. After Laughlin's death, the town passed through several hands before being purchased by its current owner, Tony Sanchez, in 1978. Sanchez has kept much of Stephenville's history alive including adding an arcade and fire pit to the community center. The town is known for its hot sauce product which is produced by Tom Benson Jr., son of Detroit Pistons owner Stanley Barkley. The sauce has been exported to many countries including Mexico and Canada.
Stephenville was founded in 1872 by Presbyterian missionaries. The town is named for General Stephen Austin, the first U.S. president and one of Texas' most famous figures. In 1893, Stephenville became the capital of the newly created Stephenville County.
