In 1917, the United States Coast Guard was created as a result of the US-UK Agreement which gave the United States military control over British waters. The Coast Guard’s first station was at Point Lookout on Long Island, New York. The Coast Guard continued to grow and expand its mission in the 1920s when it became responsible for protecting coastal communities from vessel traffic, pollution, and terrorism. The 1940s were a time of great change for the Coast Guard. World War II changed everything and led to an increased demand for coast guard services. The Coast Guard saw action in both World Wars and during peacetime until 1968 when it was reauthorized by Congress to operate as a full-time sworn force. Since then, many new technologies have been added to the Coast Guard’s arsenal including helicopters, drones, and boats that can be equipped with radar, sonar, torpedoes, and other weapons. Today’s coast guard gift history begins with President Roosevelt’s Executive Order 6103 which called for the creation of a National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) to store equipment needed in case of war or national emergency. This order helped make possible Operation Neptune's Spear which saw duty aboard vessels such as USS Lexington (CV-8) during WWII off Japan. In 1956 Congress passed Public Law 96-479 which authorized funding for programs relating to Search And Rescue (SAR). SAR is now one of the most important missions carried out by the Coast Guardsmen and women across America. Since 1969 DHS has funded two main initiatives related to coast guard gifts: Coastal Security Grants Program (CSGP) – provides funds towards purchasing items necessary for coastal security purposes; National Memorial Awards program -awards funds towards Celebrating Our Shared Heritage projects that commemorate aspects of our common culture with maritime heritage - these include Governors' Day events etc.. These grants allow organizations like SPCA or Headlands Maritime Museumto purchase items that help improve coastal security including lights/laser pointers/anchors/ towers etc..
