Stephenville is located on the banks of the Trinity River and has been settled since 1881. The first post office in Stephenville was established on December 2, 1881. The population increased rapidly from 20 residents in 1901 to 100 residents in 1911 due to the railroads coming through the area and opening up new markets for farmers. In 1915, Stephenville became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and a council. The town is named after General Sam Houston who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Growth continued along the railroad until World War II when agriculture declined and manufacturing took off leading to a decline in population from 1,800 at peak to 705 at its low point after 1970 when oil production peaked . However recent growth has returned with businesses such as medical equipment manufacturer DePuyOTec now employing over 350 people across three factories including 50% women .
