The City Council voted to rename itself "Stephenville" on July 15, 1907 following approval by the State Legislature over objections from nearby Waco. The new name honored both Johnathon Stephenson who had donated land for the city's founding and his wife Nancy who played an important role with local government during its early years. In 1915, three men were fatally shot while walking their dog across owner's front lawn; this event became known as "The Three Pigs". It wasn't until 1978 that authorities determined that two dogs were responsible for shooting those three men and no one else was involved at that time; after investigating there were no prosecutions resulting from this case Many residents still refer to this incident as "The Three Pigs". On October 10th 2006 citizens organized a protest against then-Mayor Donny Hilliard's decision not to allow gas drilling near residences within city limits due to concerns about potential water shortages caused by oil well blowouts which have occurred near other communities such as San Angelo . On December 2nd 2006 Mayor Hilliard announced he would allow drilling but only if corn farmers could be compensated for lost crop production
