The Navy has been deploying gift items to the Stafford community for years. In 1942, the Naval Forces Europe (NAVFEUR) was activated and The United States was asked to contribute munitions and supplies to help with the war effort. The first shipment of munitions arrived in Stafford on December 12th, 1942. This shipment consisted of .30 caliber machine guns, ammunition, radios, tanks and other military equipment. It is interesting to note that this was not the first time the Navy had shipped goods to Stafford; a ship called USS Constitution had passed through town in 1832. Since World War II there have been numerous deployments by both naval forces and Marines in support of various operations around the world. Most recently, Operation Neptune’s Spear took place in Afghanistan in 2009-10 and involved more than 100 ships from both navies working together. These deployments require a great deal of cargo handling capacity as well as logistical expertise which is brought to bear through partnerships between our military branches and local businesses. In recent years many gifts have also been sent directly from Washington D.C., specifically via USPS Priority Mail® Postage stamp(s). One such example is the USS Texas (BB 43) donated by Mayor Bloomberg during his visit to Fort Worth en route home from Iraq on February 9th, 2009. The USS Texas was stationed at Bahrain at that time so it provided an excellent opportunity for NAVFEURto give back by shipping some toys away! Additionally, NAVFEUR organized a Toys for Tots event at Waco Methodist Church on Saturday February 5th,2009 which collected 415 toys! Stafford is a town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name "Stafford" was derived from the Anglo-Saxon word staffa or staffe (staff), meaning post or stake. The first settlers in Stafford were men who had arrived on the Brazos River in 1836 as part of the Austin andowntown Railroad project. They named their land Stafford after Robert Stafford, a member of the railroad's board of directors. By 1881, Stafford had become a small community with a blacksmith shop and one store. In 1898, Gold Rush seekers discovered gold near Stafford and began to arrive in droves; by 1907, there were over 100 residents living in Stafford. In 1925, when San Antonio became an independent city, Mayor John Denton ordered all public buildings in town be closed so that City Hall could be renovated and used as an industrial storage facility. On October 26 of that year, firefighters responded to a call for assistance from citizens who reported seeing a man wearing only underwear walking down Main Street! When they got there they found Alonzo Banks (1893-1976) standing at attention with his rifle at his side on top of a dumpster! After being questioned by police he walked away unharmed but made national headlines when he was caught on camera climbing into an open car window to steal cigarettes from smokers outside City Hall! After World War II ended, many businesses abandoned Stafford because of Tecumseh Valley's high unemployment rates; however some local entrepreneurs revived the town's economy by starting local businesses such as a grocery store and hardware store. In 1984 photojournalist Jimmy Breslin photographed then-Mayor Don Armstrong shaking hands with Ulysses S Grant during A&M University's football game against Rice University at Robertson Stadium; this photograph has come to symbolize downtown San Antonio during its heyday before zipperhead gentrification took hold beginning around 1990s In recent years several efforts have been made to revive downtown San Antonio; these include initiatives such as adding more uses for Main Street including arts & culture events/programs such as poetry readings throughout the year and music concerts which help support local businesses; developing Downtown streetscape projects which improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists through beautification changes like resurfacing sidewalks and painting streetlights green;; initiating agroforestry programs which provide shade cover for crops indigenous to different parts of Texas According to 2011 US Census Bureau estimates,[2] 1% of the population live below poverty line while 72% are above poverty line according to2010 census figures[3]. Stafford was founded in 1856 as a small town on the Texas-Mexico border. It became a county in 1907 and was renamed Staffordshire County in 1915. The population of Stafford had grown to over 10,000 by 1920, but it declined to 6,500 by 1940 due to the Great Depression. By the early 1960s, however, the population had increased again and began growingled industrial development which led to large job losses for many people during the 1970s and 1980s. The decline of manufacturing led to significant job loss throughout much of Stafford County until 2000 when new jobs were brought about through heavy investment in education and other economic sectors. Today, Stafford remains a primarily agricultural community with a limited number of businesses that provide services such as retail or health care.
In 1836, Stafford was founded by James S. Stafford and his brother-in-law, Sam Houston. It became a county seat in 1859. The first post office was established at Stafford in 1858. In 1860, the Texas Railroad Company built a line from Galveston to Stafford and the town began to grow. The population reached 10,000 by 1870. In 1876, the Texas Legislature passed an act that created County Tx within the new state of Texas and gave it its current name of Stafford County.
