The American Revolution in Stafford, Texas began on April 19, 1775 when a group of citizens of Stafford met to discuss the city's support for the rebels. The men voted to establish a militia company and elected Captain John Nicholson as its first captain. On July 6, 1775, the townspeople gathered at their local courthouse to vote on whether or not they should become involved in the war. They decided against it and returned to their homes. On October 5, 1775, the townspeople reconvened at their courthouse and voted again to join the war. This time they decided unanimously to fight for America. On December 12, 1775, General Sam Houston announced that Stafford was chosen as one of his "gallant counties" in order to provide military assistance to settlers in nearby San Antonio. The townspeople were overjoyed and donated $1,000 worth of goods to help fund Houston's army. From then on, Stafford became a stronghold of American independence and helped contribute significantly to America's victory in the War of Independence. After independence was secured, Stafford turned its attention back towards developing its economy and becoming an important center for trade between Texas and Mexico City. In 1836, during Republic of Texas’ annexation into United States Of America (US), Stafford was placed within Santa Anna County (now Angelina County) under US jurisdiction due mostly because it had significant Mexican-American populations who lived there legally as part of that state’s population petition process following Texans’ secession from Mexico two years earlier
