The first people to settle in Stafford were families from Kentucky and Tennessee who came to the area during the early 1800s. In 1902, Stafford post office was established and became one of three towns in Gregg County. In 1930, Stafford incorporated as a city and has been governed by a City Council since that time. The city has two schools: Stafford Elementary School which serves students grades kindergarten through eighth grade; and Goldthwait Middle School which serves ninth through twelfth grade students. Theoriginal name for Stafford was "Fayetteville". A contest held to rename the town resulted in "Stafford" being chosen as the name for the new town because it sounded like an American Indian word meaning "place where deer abound." In 1955, when Fayetteville resigned its seat on Gregg County's City Council due to disagreement over whether it should become part of Austin or Round Rock after those communities were re-incorporated into Austin proper, Stafford became an independent municipality governed entirely by its own council with no representation from Fayetteville. Its current nickname is based off its location - just outside Austin - within easy commuting distance for most people living within its boundaries making it one of busiest municipalities within Texas without any major cities or counties located nearby
