Stafford, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,703 at the 2010 census. Stafford was founded by settlers from England in 1847 and named for General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first school in Stafford was opened in 1851. The first post office was established in 1850. In 1907, the name of the town changed to Stafford after then-Governor James M. Stafford. By 2013, the population of Stafford had declined to 1,733 due to various factors such as loss of industry and economic development outside of town. In 1916, George Patton visited Stafford and noted its beauty on his report "The United States Army during World War I" which is now housed at Fort Sam Houston Museum (Hudspeth County Historical Society). Patton recommended that American forces stationed there build a new artillery battery called "Patton's Battery" specifically designed to fire shells into enemy lines near Lufkin Dam which would have devastating consequences for their opponents if successful. When construction began on what became known as "Patton's Battery", local citizens donated land for the installation including 5 acres (2 hectares) of swampy ground that still persists today as part of the property donation from Patton's widow Joanne him to Fort Sam Houston Museum today
