Airforce gift history in Stafford, Texas began with the development of the United States Air Force. On July 14, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the National Security Act of 1947 which provided for the creation of a national air force. The act created two commands within the USAF - Air Forces Combat Command and Headquarters Tactical Air Command (HQ TAC). HQ TAC was to be responsible for all combat activities within Aerospace Defense Command (AFC) and all other USAF components. The first operational squadron activated under HQ TAC was No. 3 Squadron at Lackland AFB, TX on December 16, 1947. On November 15th 1948 General Curtis LeMay delivered his famous "The flying Fortnight" speech which called for more planes and missiles to be built in order to defend our country against invasion by China or any other foreign power. This speech set off a building boom within the USAF and led to creation of numerous organizations and squadrons directly related to air defense including: 1) aerial gunnery schools such as Randolph AFB, TX; 2) bomber units such as William J. Lawrence's Eighth Air Force; 3) fighter groups such as Third Fighter Wing at Barksdale AFB; 4) missile units such as Long Beach Arsenal Missile Center; 5) intelligence support servicessuch as Far East Strategic Reconnaissance Service (FESR); 6) command post facilities; 7), armories; 8), training ranges; 9), munitions storage areas and 10) research laboratories associated with various weapon systems being developed or tested by AFC/HQ TAC during this time period In 1950 Major General Thomas M Dynamic assumed command of HQ TAC from General Dynamics Chairman Lieutenant Colonel Floyd Crippen who had served since 1949 when DCI John Hultgren became Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence Directorate Studies (AANS/DCSI). Under Dynamic's leadership developmental programs were initiated that would result in establishment ofairborne warning and control forces (AWCFORs), electronic warfare capabilities, aircraft operations research programs including Fat Man project undertaken at Wright-Patterson AFB Wayne County PA while El Toro AF also received personnel necessary for its own atmospheric testing program known ASAT Project 66 which utilized Douglas A-29D Superfortress bombers equipped with high explosive incendiary devices designed to create smoke screens over Japan during World War II without causing damage or loss of life . In early 1951 general Dynamics followed up their participation in AANS/DCSI by becoming an official contractor organization within AFC under the name Special Projects Division which assigned responsibility for carrying out many military projects across all service branches outside those specifically assigned thereto including: strategic bombing studies conducted by RAND Corporation on behalf of both USAAF generals Eisenhower & Marshallnonexistent prior thereto nuclear bombing studies being conducted simultaneouslyat Los Alamos National Laboratoryby Groves Army Ammunition Plant director Major James Fenton pursuant thereto weapons development objectives established by Joint Chiefs Of Staff 508 Agreement between Secretary Roosevelt And Director McCloyAugust 15, 1945 In 1958 Hughes Aircraft Company merged with McDonnell Aircraft Corporation creating McDonnell Douglas Corporation while LockheedMartin continued operating separate subsidiaries known as Lockheed Aircraft Research Establishment(LAREPE)/North American Aviation plant Number One(NORAD)), Lockheed Martin Aeronautical Systems Division(LMSD)/Marine Corps detachment Number Two(MCOD2)/Army Ballistic Missile Agency detachment Number Three(ABMA3)),and Northrop Grumman Information Systems Division/NASA Goddard Space Flight Center until finally disbanding on October 1st 1990 effective September 30th 1991 following competition from RaytheonCooperative Agreement reached between these four companies March 11th 1959 This paper will not discuss individual contractors involved nor their individual products but will focus instead upon how gifts have been given throughoutAIR FORCE GIFT HISTORY IN STAFFORD, TX
