The USS Texas (BB-65) was a World War II United States Navy destroyer escort that served in the South Pacific and Western Pacific during the war. She was named for the state of Texas. The ship operated out of Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands from 1942 until 1945. On July 29, 1944, USS Texas sailed into Pearl Harbor on her first deployment as part of the US Seventh Fleet. From there she conducted patrols off Key West, Florida and Pearl Harbor before returning to Eniwetok On October 5th. In early 1945, USS Texas escorted transport ships convoying troops back to Japan when they were attacked by Japanese forces off Ulithi Atoll. The attack killed seventeen American sailors and injured twenty-eight others. The damage done to the USS Texas also prevented her from rejoining her fleet at Ulithi that same day. USS Texas served in the Japan Self Defense Force until 1946 when she was decommissioned and scrapped in Yokosuka Bay. Her remains are currently buried at sea near Tokyo Bay..
