The United States Military Academy at West Point was founded that year and quickly became a training ground for future officers. The 1st Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army arrived in Southlake in 1847 and soon began to train local militia members for deployment into Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1848, a Royal Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment was also stationed in Southlake and helped contribute to the defense of the city against Indian attacks. In 1861, two years after Texas entered Confederate States of America as part of the war that led to secession, General Sam Houston’s Texans joined Confederate forces and Fort Worth became their capital. The Texas Rangers were established in Southlake under Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton on November 15, 1861 to protect local citizens from Unionists who had threatened to march on the city if it remained within Confederate lines. In 1865, after Southern states seceded from the Union and declared themselves an “independent republic” named “Transylvania” under President Abraham Lincoln, General John Buford ordered his troops into East Austin to prevent any possible Republican supporters from moving into central Texas or joining up with Ulysses S. Grant’s army besieging Richmond. The Battle of Prairie Grove resulted in three dead Texan soldiers along with many wounded civilians; this event is generally considered as one of the most significant engagements of Reconstruction Era south Texas. Buford later resigned his commission and returned home following what he called a disgraceful defeat at Prairie Grove which destroyed much of his reputation within Confederate ranks. However, Buford would lead a major attack against Union positions at Fair Oaks outside Austin months later which forced Johnson Offenbacher (the new general) out of command and ultimately secured victory for the Confederacy over General George Armstrong Custer's US cavalry unit at Champion Hill near San Antonio on April 14, 1865 - thus ending Reconstruction nationally while leaving reconstruction efforts ongoing in south Texas where Buford had initially been appointed general by Lincoln only to be replaced weeks later by Offenbacher

In 1960, the Dallas Cowboys football team moved from Arlington to southcentral Dallas and played their first game at Waco Field outside Fort Worth; this event helped start what would become known as “the Southwest Division” of the NFL. In 1966, when Interstate 10 was built through centralDallas, portions of town north of I-10 became outlying neighborhoods which grew rapidly thanks to annexation by nearby cities:Southfork (now Irving), Flower Mound (now Richardson), Garland (now Mesquite), Temple Hills (now Oak Cliff), Pomeroy Ferry Landing (Pomeroy Island), Hutchins Bayou (Hutchinson Island) before becoming full towns within their respective cities:South Fork 7 miles away from Flower Mound; Garland 20 miles away from Mesquite; Temple Hills 30 miles away from Irving; Oak Cliff 40 miles away from Richardson; Hutchins Bayou 50 miles away from McKinney.) After years of growth in annexed areas surrounding Southlake center – including Flower Mound/Richardson Heights/Mesquite to the north,hundreds more acres were annexed into Southlake over time including much current neighborhoods on both sides of I-10: Park Ridge Ranch to our west side after annexation by Plano; Magnolia Gardens/Willowbrook Village east side after annexation byDallas; Willowbrook Village west side after annexation by Frisco . Today most people know only a tiny fraction about these annexations due largely to lack access to historical records or public transportation but they have had significant consequences forSouth Lakeians since they occurred: primarily increased development intensity around what are now Midtown streets along I-10 between Grapevine Rd./Shaw Ave., NW Loop 820th St./Pinecrest Dr., NW Highway 121st St./ US 287th St.– all major thoroughfares near where property lines once differed between communities; high concentration residential zoning around schools proximate Interstate 10 made it difficult for many families living near downtownskinnedbey residents interested in staying put despite large offers for properties elsewhere . This situation has been changing however over recent years with increasing numbers of people moving into new developments closer to downtown while also preserving some homes that have been sitting vacant for decades

Southlake, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 81,829. The city was founded in 1881 as a result of the merger of two small settlements - South Lake and Maple Grove - by railroad magnate George W. Smith. The name "Southlake" first appeared on maps in 1887, and was chosen because the town sat on an old Indian trail that ran from Austin to Dallas. In 1902, Southlake incorporated as a municipality with a population of 15 residents; it grew rapidly under Mayor Charles J. Kapp’s leadership, reaching 100 residents by 1912 and 150 by 1916. In 1924, Kapp became mayor for life after being elected mayor four times in a row without running for reelection; he remains mayor to this day (though he no longer holds office). In 1950, Southlake merged with nearby Garland to form the largest municipal merger in Texas history; Garland has since repealed its incorporation ordinance. South Lakes High School offers students grades 9-12 education which is classified as a public school district under Section 706a of the Education Code of Texas (the “Code”). The Code provides for funding decisions made by individual districts regarding how best to provide their educational services to their students subject to various federal requirements including No Child Left Behind Act Title I funds which go towards teacher training and other related initiatives
