Southlake, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and is the county seat of Grayson County. The population was 11,816 at the 2010 census, making it the eighth-largest city in Texas and one of its most populous counties. Southlake, Texas is a city located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 95,814 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Tarrant County and the second-largest city in Dallas County. The first European to set eyes on what is now Southlake was Antonio Vallejo. He landed on the present day Houston Ship Channel on November 24, 1836 while exploring Galveston Bay for new shipping routes. In 1840 Commodore James Kenedy bought land east of downtown from José Garza for $1/acre (and today's Kenedy Park). On October 20 of that same year, General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered San Jacinto Creek and named it after himself - La Bahía de Santiago - meaning "The bay of Santiago" or "Bay of Santiago Creek". After Mexican independence was announced in 1821, López de Santa Anna ordered all Native Americans living east of his army's march from Texas to their ancestral homes within 10 days or be killed. As a result many people fled into exile across the US Midwest including Francisco Lopez and his family who settled at what is now Arlington Heights in Chicago Illinois among others In 1835 Austin lawyer John Hogg purchased some 640 acres (253 hectares) along San Jacinto Creek opposite present day Southlake with plans to build an agricultural colony called Hogg's Colony which never happened due to economic difficulties and lack of interest by both participants In 1865 John Swayne built a store and post office at what is now First Baptist Church southbound I-635 off FM 627 just north of present day Jones Road This building still stands today across from Taco Bell southbound exit #5 (Exit 403) . In 1870 J C Penney opened his first store in this area . The town rapid growth continued as early transportation methods improved such as railroads arrived with goods being transported by teamsters throughout central Texas
