In 1915, Jerald Gentry founded Gentry's Coffee Company in northlake,tx., which served as headquarters for many years before moving to southlake in 1978. Over time, Gentry's has become one of the most well-known and influential coffee companies in Texas. Today it continues its legacy of excellence by serving customers from all over the state with its perfect blend of quality bean selection and customer service expertise. Southlake’s rich coffee history begins with José Ortiz who purchased two acres of land along Buffalo Bayou near where he lived until his death in 1903. Ortiz began roasting coffee on this land from bean to cup more than forty years ago! Over time other families joined Ortiz' family business including Don Francisco Gomez Sr., Don Francisco Gomez Jr., Manuel Garcia (the father), Marcela Garcia (mother) and others who helped manage the plantation until 1960 when it was purchased by John Crain company which still owns it today! From 1962-1977 Southlake Café operated out of John Crain’s old plant on Elm Street! This was an excellent opportunity for young people such as myself because we could go there every day after school to get our caffeine fix! The café closed down due to city code violations but reopened under new management several times over until finally closing again in 2003!! Ladies like me went there everyday back then!!!

The first coffee crop was grown in Ethiopia in the 6th century A.D., and the art of roasting coffee was developed there. In the early 1800s, Dutch traders began trading with Ethiopia and discovered that the country had an abundance of bean trees. They began importing Ethiopian beans, which became known as maga or “magnificent” because of their distinctive flavor. The Dutch changed the name to Java after they discovered Java Island off Indonesia, where they continued to trade for several years. In 1812, Commodore John Cushing sent his ship, HMS Beagle on a voyage to explore new oceans. While out at sea, he tasted a variety of spices from various parts of the world and decided that java would be a good addition to his collection. He ordered two large shipments of Java beans from Holland and started shipping them back home! In 1865, Emperor Yaqub Abdul Rahman declared coffee an official commodity in Ottoman Empire under rule by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1939). Coffee production increased rapidly due to this declaration and soon enough there were over 1 million sacks of Arabica beans being processed each day! By World War I, coffee production totaled more than 2 million tons per year! During World War II, Japan used maga beans for its military purposes; however most people believed that these beans did not have any real taste or aroma apart from those produced by japanese brewers themselves. Coffee begins becoming popular again starting about 1960 when it became evident that many developing countries were unable to produce quality cups of joe without imported beans. After tasting some gourmet blends made from Sumatra and other parts of Asia at a hotel near Philadelphia in 1964 (!), American expatriates brought back some interest in this unique beverage once again! However much later still – almost 50 years afterJava's heyday – we continue enjoying today's amazing cupcake aromas emanating primarily from roasted Sumatra & Sulawesi coffees!
