In 1838, a German immigrant opened the first grocery store in Southlake. The town soon grew into a thriving community that supported many businesses and people. In 1865, John Deming began selling ice cream from his truck on Main Street. This led to the growth of Southlake's third most important industry- agriculture- which continued until World War II.
Southlake, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 947,821 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in and the county seat of Dallas County. Southlake is a suburb of Dallas and has a population density of 5,381/km² (16,992/sq mi). It began as an agricultural village on a small tract near present-day MidtownDallas. The first grocery store opened in 1925, and by 1930 there were six stores. By 1935 Southlake had over 50 businesses and 1,500 residents. At that time it was one of the most vibrant cities in Texas with strong economic growth throughout its early years The City Council passed an ordinance setting up zoning for residential development on April 17th, 1947 which allowed for more than eight homes per acre (2 hectares) within city limits. This ordinance led to rapid growth; from 1947 to 1951 there was a gain of 2,000 homes valued at $515,000 just within Southlake’s borders alone! In 1952 NorthPark Boulevard became an arterial roadway connecting downtown Dallas with uptown Southlake while also supporting heavy industry adjacent to Interstate 635W; this created new pockets ofresidential development around I-635W that continue today (See: Downtown Dallas – History Timeline). In 1957 SouthLake Plaza became home to America’s first drive-in restaurant when Cobb’s Drive-In opened at 8600 Research Road (now Goode Highway). There has been coffee production in the area now known as Indonesia for over three thousand years. There are many different strains of coffee, and it is still used today throughout most of the world. The first Arab traders to visit Indonesia found wild coffee plants and brought back seeds to plant at their own homes in Europe and Asia. From there, other European and Asian traders began taking home beans and planting them themselves. The Dutch first discovered Java in 1595, which was then part of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). In 1621, when the Dutch were expelled from Java, they took with them all the coffee trees they’d grown. This left Indonesians with a monopoly on coffee production for many years. In 1885, an American named John Dennison started importing Turkish-grown coffee from Anatolia into America. He called his new product “Java Coffee” because it looked like Java but tasted more like Turkish Coffee (the beans were roasted using a process similar to that used to roast tea). It wasn’t until 1907 that Americans started calling anything made from Arabic-grown coffee “Java Coffee.” By this time, however, Indonesian farmers had developed their own specific strains of coffee that became better-suited to American taste preferences than the original Turkish variety. It wasn’t until World War II that espresso became popularized in America; java never caught on very well there! However, thanks largely to Starbucks Corporation's purchase of Peet's Coffee Company in 1994 and its establishment of espresso bars all over America (including some inside military bases), java is now widely considered both high quality espresso and a mainstream drink across most parts of the world where it is consumed recreationally or commercially.

In 1555, Spanish traders discovered Java and started trading coffee with Indonesia. The first commercially printed coffee cards appeared in 1654. Southlake is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Southlake is situated on the banks of the Trinity River and had a population of 158,635 as of July 1, 2018. It is also home to Southlake Independent School District and Southlake High School, which are both part of The Dallas Independent Schools System. The first settler in what would become Southlake was cashier James Hargrave who arrived in 1859. He founded a store called Hargrave and Company on land that he now owns and operates as an antique dealership near downtown. In 1865, John Blythe donated 204 acres (81 hectares) along the Trinity River to make into a town site named after him – Southlake – with government support through The Brazos County Commissioners Court Act No 4 of 1865. A post office was established at Southlake on October 15, 1867, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1870, Jethro Gibbs started his own grocery store at what is now Champions Drive and James Hardie took over from Gibbs two years later as the first commercial grocer in town with both stores sharing one entrance/exit at Champion Drive and selling groceries such as fresh eggs, milk, butter and flour; ice cream; cigarettes; cigars; hats; among other items. By 1880 there were six grocery stores operating within town limits including three by Jethro Gibbs Jr., two by Hardie’s son-in-law Harry Wills (1851-1927) (opened 1886), one by Elisha Moulton (1857-1937) & Sons (opened 1889), one by Fenton Barney & Son (1868-1920) (opened 1890), three hardware stores operated by citizens Tom Laddington(1869-) William Cook(1870-)& Samuel Sowell(1872-)and Rufus Kapp(1875-) all inside or adjacent to each other on Champion Drive between Griffin Street eastward to Ironton Road northward to Main Street westward with Pharmacy being built across Main Street from Sam's Hardware Store next door about 1895 joining thoseGRAPHIC: Map ofsouthlake_texas1900 Map compiled courtesy Google Earth One hundred years ago—October 15th 1865—the city of south Lakes incorporation occurred when land donation by John Blythe for $204 was accepted by commissioners court #4 via proclamation from Presiding Judge David Crenshaw III (@DavidCrenshawTX). With this event began what would be known as "South Lake's History" - an era where many great things happened within this small community! From here many pioneers set forth into their careers founding businesses such as furniture maker Geoghan Bros., physician Driggs & Moreland Law Firm #1 which became famous nationally for representing law firms during prohibition days (& still does today!), banker Pemberton Bankshawe (#2bankerofthesouthlakes#3pembertonbankshawe), real estate developer Ernest Beaumont (#4ereniebeaumont)—soon followed by others like Service Electric Corporation builder Vernon Rankin (#5vernorrankin)—all while dining out at various establishments located throughout downtown propriety! Many people have contributed greatly to this unique history we know today including Mayor Jeff Decker who has been instrumental in maintaining our vibrant atmosphere since day 1!
In 1836, the Mexican War ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty ceded all of Mexico to the United States, and began what would be a long process of integrating new immigrants into American society.Southlake was one of the most heavily populated areas in Texas during this time, and saw a great influx of people from surrounding counties. The area quickly became known for its produce and meat markets, as well as its many churches and schools. Southlake also played an important role in the development of Texas statehood, becoming one of the first towns in America to ratify the Constitution on July 4th, 1861.
