Southlake is a small town in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 20,746 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Southlake was founded by Scottish immigrants in 1879. The first post office in Southlake was established in 1880. In 1907, the name was changed to Southlake Heights to reflect its elevation above Dallas City Hall and other downtown businesses. In 1912, Southlake became a city with a population of 10,000 people and annexed nearby Arlington Heights. The annexation caused much conflict between the two cities because Arlington Heights wanted to keep its own water supply and sewers while Southlake wanted to join the city sewer system as part of its annexation process. The final decision on annexing Arlington Heights was made by an arbitrator under then-Mayor John Buford who ruled that both cities would be better off if they joined together as one municipality with their own water and sewer systems. In 1924, Southlake merged with neighboring Richardson to form what is now called Richardson-Southlake Township (renamed Arroyo Valley in 1994). In 1970, Heritage Park Boulevard east of I-10 was closed due to engineering concerns about how it would affect future growth withintown limits; this closure has been blamed for contributing to the decline of southcentral Dallas over the past few decades. Southlake is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Southlake was founded in 1856 by Scotsmen and Englishmen who came to Texas to ranch. The first post office in town was established in 1857. Southlake has a rich history dating back to its establishment as a town. In 1870, General Sam Houston named his home "South Lake" after his plantation near Nowhere, Louisiana. In 1876, Albert Sidney Johnston served as mayor of Southlake and later became one of the first U.S. Senators from Texas when he won election to that position in 1906. In 1922, Harry Houdini performed his famous "Variety show" at Lord's Theatre Center in Southlake with an audience that included President Warren G Harding and First Lady Lou Holtz among others; this event helped make Southlake known nationwide as a electronics center for entertainment purposes during the 1920s and 1930s (Houdini had previously toured there years earlier). In 1945, local farmers successfully petitioned for annexation by Dallas because they felt their land would be affected by military installations being built nearby on Peleliu Island (now Major Deegan Airport). On February 14th of that year, Dallas City Council voted 7-0 to annex the entire city of North Park – including Southlake – making it the largest municipality ever annexed intoDallas without any vote from citizens or their representatives! This landmark moment marked what many consider to be one of Dallas’ most significant moments during its early days as an American city! Just two years later on July 15th 1946 Mayor George Bush signed an ordinance creating Fort Worth district No 4 which encompassed most of downtownDallas eastward up Main Street including much of today’s southside known as Ft Worth Heights! As part of this districtization process Mayor Bush also designated Elmendorf Air Force Base within Fort Worth District No 4 which would become one future world-famous airport! Finally on November 12nd 1951 voters in Arlington County approved passage of Measure V which created Arlington County with its own government and authorities independent from those located within Travis County ! Today ArlingtonCounty is composed entirelyofDallasCounty residents while TravisCounty continuesto have some jurisdictional authority over areas such as Fort Worth District No 4 (currently Elmendorf AFB)
In 1847, the land that is now Southlake was part of Mexican territory. When the United States acquired it in 1848, it became a part of Texas. The first white people to live in Southlake were surveyors working for the US government. By 1850, there were about 100 settlers living in what is now Southlake. The first store in Southlake was built by John Hogg and his brother-in-law, James Waddell. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewart Johnston attacked Union forces near the town and drove them off the battlefield. On July 3, 1861, at 2:00 PM local time (8 pm EDT), Southlake's incorporation as a municipality happened when a vote was taken to adopt this form of government by a majority of residents present at its meeting on July 4th.
