The initial branch of the Coast Guard was created in 1917 when the Texas Legislature authorized the creation of a coast guard service to keep maritime trade and navigation safe. In 1937, the Coast Guard was organized into four divisions: patrol, search and rescue, weather observation and communication. The first units were stationed at Fort Worth Naval Air Station and then at Channel Island Naval Station before being moved to Southlake in 1951. Today, there are 11 stations located throughout Southlake including one aboard the USS Constitution Museum ship.
