In the early 1800s, Southlake, Texas was a small town with a population of around 3,000. The town's only source of income came from agriculture. However, in 1881, Southlake became home to the first military airbase in the United States. At this airbase, the United States Army Air Service began flight training of new pilots. In 1923, Congress passed the National Defense Act which created the United States Air Force. As part of this act, Congress established an air force Commissariat which assigned planes and personnel to various aviation brigades within the USAF. The First World War saw American flying forces participation in many conflicts such as engagements on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war ended, American fighter pilots returned to flight training over Southlake and other USAAF bases across America. By 1940, Southlake had become one of America's most important fighter communities due to its rich bomber history dating back to World War II! The city hosted numerous international aircraft markings ceremonies during this time including those for both RAF Bomber Command and Yugoslavian Partisan Fighter Squadron No 1 (JAS-1). In 1951-1952 aerial displays were held at White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico celebrating America's entry into NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization). On July 20th 1952 two F-105D Shooting Stars – piloted by Colonel James Hogg – flew over Midland AFB CA while participating in Operation Blue Book; a USAF operation looking for missile sites inside Cuba! With more than 240 years of service under its belt and thousands of Pilots & Officers trained here at Southlake AFB we can proudly say that “Airmen always fly where they are needed”!

Southlake, Texas is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 343,824 at the 2010 census, making it the third-most populous city in Dallas-Fort Worth. Southlake is also home to Westlake University and Shady Grove Golf Club. It is one of several cities annexed byDallas during its annexation process in 1907. The namesake of Southlake is John Mays (1841–1926), a native of Kentucky who became an entrepreneur and rancher in central Texas. He built his first post office here in 1875 and named it Maysville after himself and his father, Maj.-Gen. David Mays (1795–1872). In 1907, Dallas annexed Southlake as part of its growth into what would become Dallas County. The name "Southlake" was chosen to reflect the town's location on Lake Lewisburg northwest of downtownDallas - south of where Lakewood now stands - giving it a sense similar to that experienced by pioneers when they first discovered this new land.[2] In 1924,Shady Grove Golf Club opened its doors for play just beyond the Limits line which divided Arlington Heights from Southlake proper; until that time Arlington Heights only encompassed sections within or near Arlington Cemetery[3]. As golf rapidly grew popular throughout North America during the 1920s and 1930s with professional tournaments being held annually starting in 1929 at Fairmont Country Club east of Houston,[4],Shady Grove was an ideal spot for such events as well; hosting some Masters Tournament qualifiers between 1933 and 1939 before those tournaments were moved toHouston due to World War II[5]. In 1949, Shady Grove hosted its first major tournament sanctioned by Professional Golfers' Association(PGA) with $10,000 purse going up for grabs including four major championships over three days; leaving behind a lasting legacy both on course as well as spectator experience[6]. With world renowned golfers like Jack Nicklaus (nickname: Tiger), Chris Evert (nickname: Mia), Arnold Palmer ( nickname: Slick Rick) gracing their fairways each year throughout much of the 1950s through 1960s,[7]shady grove quickly became known as one of America's preeminent golf courses[8], unsurpassed even then by many contemporary courses located outside Greater DFW areas like Pinehurst or Sawgrass!
