Some of the earliest coffee shops in South Houston were located on 18th Street, just a few blocks away from Rice University. The first coffee shop on this block was called The Coffee House and it operated from 1915 to 1917. In 1916, Harry Gibbs opened the Gopher Coffee Shop at 5th and Main Streets. This shop served ground coffee and tea. In 1922, Harry Gibbs’ son-in-law bought the business from his father-in-law, and the name changed to The Gopher Coffee & Tea Store. In 1929, Willis Bigham opened the Beans & Brews restaurant at 4th andMain Streets which served fresh roasted beans by hand. In 1934, John Epps started serving cold brewed coffee out of his home at 132 16th Street. This location would later become known as Starbucks Starbucks Coffee Corporation was founded in 1976 by Howard Schultz with three friends - Doug McCaughey, Ron Burkle and Jeremy Siegel - all students at Texas Christian University (TCU).
South Houston is a city located in Harris County, Texas. The population was 54,665 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Harris County and home to several governmental institutions including the county courthouse and district court buildings. South Houston is also the location of Hobby Airport, which serves as a regional airport for southern Texas. The area that now makes up SouthHouston was first settled by pioneer Texans in 1836. In 1845, Houston was founded as a small town on the east side of today's SouthHouston Avenue. By 1870, much of what would become SouthHouston had been developed around Loop 610 East and Interstate 45. Railroads made it possible for Texans to reach their new hometowns quickly and easily, making it one of the most rapidly growing areas in Texas during this time period. The growth of Dallas-Fort Worth delayed annexation by Houston until 1912 when both cities were combined into one large city under president Woodrow Wilson’s New Deal program known as “The Great Redevelopment Act." This act saw many development projects throughout south Harris County including annexation of much of present day SouthHouston along with other neighborhoods such as Post Oak and Friendswood in north Harris County (now northwest Austin). After years of struggle by community groups led by Mayor James Kupka (D), City Council approval finally arrived in 1938 to create what would become known as "SouthHouston". In recent years, downtown SouthHouston has seen significant revitalization thanks to investment from local businesses, philanthropy from individuals and organizations like The Greater Houston Partnership (HGP), government funding from HUD’s Community Development Financial Institutions Program (CDFIP) through its low-interest rate loans called Area Voucher Programs (AVPs), private contributions through bond issues or grants from donors like The John D. Rockefeller Jr., Sr., Foundation/Donor Relations Initiative within HUD’s Officeof Inspector General etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera... These types of investments have helped make downtown an attractive destination for businesses and tourists alike while also creating better public transportation options available within minutes' walk or bike ride away from many businesses such As well As attracting more young professionals who want easy access to all That energy & culture right here In our own backyard!

Houston became a provisional capital of the United States in 1845 and an official capital in 1846. The Texas Revolution started in 1835 and ended with the Battle of Whitney Bayou on April 6,1837. Mexican forces burned down most of downtown Houston on November 5,1836. The city's first mayor was William Travis.
