The Navy has a long and proud history in South Houston. From the early days of the Texas Navy, through World War II and into the present day, the navy has been an important part of our community. The first navy ship to arrive in Houston was USS Constitution on April 26, 1838. The ship helped start Houston’s naval militia and slowly but surely became a staple in local waters. The Constitution served as a flagship for both the Perry Expedition against Mexico and during the Mexican-American War. It also played an important role in helping secure Texas Independence from Mexico. Throughout its history, the navy has deployed more than 2,000 sailors to serve in ports around our country. These deployments have helped contribute to America’s security, defense and economy at home and abroad. As we enter into another decade with Operation Neptune Spear – which will see more than 20 warships sailing out of South Houston – it is clear that this navy is still vital to Texans’ safety and prosperity.
The U.S. Navy has been Deployed in multiple Wars and some other conflicts since the 1700s. In 1991, The USS Constitution was deployed to the Gulf War as a platform for Operation Desert Storm. This war was fought between Iraq and Iran and resulted in the death of hundreds of American soldiers and sailors. The USS Constitution is currently on display at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, which is home to the United States Marine Corps Museum. Despite these challenges, SouthHouston remains an important part of Texans' cultural landscape due to its rich history dating back over seventy years
