South Houston, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 78,561 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-most populous city in Texas. South Houston is one of the wealthiest cities in America and has been described as "the cauldron of American culture." Thecity was founded by freed slaves who leftHouston for Dallas in 1836 to escape racial violence that had erupted since their emancipation from slavery. The area now known as South Houston was first inhabited by Creek Indians and later by Alamo Scouts under Spanish rule before becoming part of Mexican territory after independence from Spain. South Houston, Texas is a city located in Houston County, Texas. The population was 98,726 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Harris County afterHouston. South Houston was founded on October 1, 1836 by General Sam Houston as an outpost on the Red River in what is now MidtownHouston. The first settlers of South Houston were soldiers from Tennessee who had been called to help protect the Texans during their war for independence from Mexico. The town grew rapidly and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. By 1865, when Sam Houston was elected president of the United States and moved his capital to Austin, SouthHouston became part of that city's government. In the early 20th century, SouthHouston experienced rapid growth due to its importance as a major railroad junction and commercial center. The Cotton Exchange Building (now known as Rice University) was built in 1923 and served as headquarters for various railroads until it burned down in 1961. Today some of the older buildings still stand including: Baptist Hospital (1927), City Hall (1923), Methodist Episcopal Church (1886), Post Office Annex (1948), Texaco gas station (1994). In addition many new buildings have been constructed since then including: South Side High School (2002), Clear Lake Park(2006), and Toyota Center(2008). During World War II, much effort went into production at Toyota plants in Southern Houston under Army Air Forces auspices; Liberty Shipbuilding produced USS Constitution class battleships while National Steel Works produced warships such as USS Lexington Class Destroyer Squadron One - "Lincoln" class destroyer ships used for air defense assignment and service within Fleet escorts throughout support operations against Imperial Japan during WWII; among others . AfterWWII both plants closed but reopened again following Korean War era productions with same name which lasted until 1984 when they closed again once more . 1945-1965 Gulfstream Jet Engines plant also operated out of this area producing aircraft parts primarily for USAF/Navy use however all this activity stopped suddenly after 9/11 due to security concerns
