Socorro was founded in 1835 by Don José de la Vega and Martín de Miranda. The town was named after Socorro, a Spanish name for the Santa Anna River. It grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its natural resources and its location on the Texas-Mexican border. In 1846, Socorro became a county seat of Cameron County. The population of Socorro reached 10,000 by 1850. By 1860, Socorro had become an important commercial center in the region due to its location on Route 66. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Socorro was one of several Mexican towns that sided with Confederacy against United States forces. After the war, Socorros economy declined as many businesses closed their doors due to lack of trade opportunities with Mexico City. However, some new businesses started up inSocorróduring this time such as a grocery store and a cotton gin. In 1923, socorrónwas incorporated as a city under the administration of then-Governor Lamar Alexander. At first glance, socorrón appeared to be struggling during World War II: it only had two factories producing munitions until 1944 when they reopened thanks to government assistance program called "Lend Lease". However, despite all odds however, socorrón flourished through 1945 when ithosted both Expo '45 and world's fair '46 which brought increased tourism around the area Today there is much progress being made in socorrón; for instance there is now an express bus service from downtown Socorrontothe beaches at Boca del Rio or Playa del Carmen each day; furthermore there are several restaurants and bars including Pancho Villa's bar which has been open since 1925; moreover there are also plans for developing new neighborhoods such as Calle Ocho (named after another river located nearby) which will connect social services with businesses between them so that people can live closer together without having to travel far away; finally most importantly socorrón is becoming more diverse with more people coming from other parts of Mexico and abroad who want to invest in this growing city
