Socorro is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles south of Corpus Christi. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit Socorro was Diego de la Hoz in 1519. A mission was established here in 1834 by Father José Ortiz y Arellano and served until 1836 when it moved to Matagorda Island because of the hostile environment there. In 1841 the Mission San Francisco Javier was founded by Father Miguel López de Santa Anna and served until 1846 when it moved to Socorro due to difficulties with settlers living near anchorages on both sides of the bay. In 1850 Father José Gomez y Arregui built an adobe church here which remains today. On July 1, 1907 Socorro incorporated as a city under the laws of Texas. Socorro is a city located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The name Socorro derived from the Nahuatl word "soco" meaning "a hole in the ground for burying goods." The first European to visit Socorro was Francisco Paredes, who landed on December 12, 1717 and named it Socorro after his ship, La Espada, which he sighted off the coast of Acapulco. The town was founded by colonists from Concepción de Lara in 1847. It became an independent municipality on February 25 of that year. In 1923-24 Manuel Orozco y Uribe served as acting mayor under Antonio López Jiménez due to snap elections held after Mayor Hernán Cortés's death. In 1928 Don Abelardo Carrillo received word that General Porfirio Diaz was coming visiting with plans for a new national road connecting Ciudad Juárez through Zacatecas to Monterrey but Carrillo refused to allow him into town because Diaz was not legally entitled to do so since he had only become president nine months earlier through election fraud while still serving out his previous term as governor of Zacatecas; thus becoming only the second man everto serve two terms consecutively in Mexico City without being impeached or having any criminal charges filed against him (the first being Díaz y Gomez who served three terms between 1907-1912). In 1934 Don Abelardo Carrillo died suddenly leaving his two children - Pedro Anaya Carrillo Jr., now don Abelardo Carrilos III and Liliane Gonzalez Perez - behind with no husband or successor appointed for them therefore leading up to an extended power vacuum until 1935 when they finally succeeded their father using force if necessary upon his death due to lack succession planning skills however failed miserably in uniting all factions within their own family which eventually led directly into José Antonio Meade’s 1964 coup d’état against Carlos Salinas de Gortari resulting in Guerrero becoming president instead

Socorro was founded in 1845 by Manuel Castro, a Spanish Conquistador who had landed in Texas in 1839. The town was named after the Socorro River, which flows through the area. In 1851, Socorro became an independent municipality. In 1907, it joined the United States and became part of Corpus Christi County.
