The Snyder Marine Museum has a rich history of marine gift giving. From the early days when people would bringvessels full of seafood to the present, gifts from sea creatures have been an important part of maritime culture. One of the earliest examples of marine gift giving is from 1892 when Mrs. John Snyder donated a lobster dish to the city of Snyder. This gesture was followed by donations of scallops, crabmeat, and other seafood in 1913, 1915, and 1917 respectively. In 1933, Mrs. Snyder gifted a set of six whaleskin bath towels to her hometown. The next year she donated two sets of Christmas pajamas to the museum as a thank you for all the help given during their previous year’s fundraiser spearheaded by Mayor Clyde Kapp and his wife Norma Laughlin Kapptischke! In 1937 Mrs. Hilda Stroud gave a purse filled with seashells and coral to be used as wall art in her son’s bedroom at home; this was followed in 1941 by donation of two large salvaged WWII submarines (the USS Tulsa and USS Quincy) for use as exhibition vessels at the museum! In 1945 Mrs. Stroud gifted three live octopuses (Eudyptes chrysolophus) to be exhibited in our new exhibit hall on site! In 1951Mrs Stroud again gave some beautiful shells/coral as partof her Mothers Day gift basket which also included fruitcake, yogurt and cream cheese sandwiches! Throughout these years we have seen many donations from local citizens including: 1959-1960 Commodore Harry “Hap” Arnold donated four lifejackets and three lifebelts; 1961-1963 Mr./Mrs Roy Eadsdon contributed five tanks (four American Type F1G/C torpedoes each); 1964-1966 Dr./Ms Linda Sudden contributed ten jellyfish baskets; 1967-1969 Don & Sue Deering contributed fourteen golf clubs; 1970-1972 Lynn & Rick Wiser donated one turtlehell sculpture; 1973-1975 Msgr./Dr.(Mrs.) Shirley Ann Beamer contribution(s) includes twelve jellied shrimp dishes complete with live shrimp(s), seven clam chowder bowls complete with clams(s), nine eggs Benedict plates complete with hucksters eggs(!), thirteen salmon fishing net tops (additional items may include moss or seaweedorthy nets), fifteen copper coffee pots engraved with ship names and dates etc.; 1976 thru 1978 Denise & Doug Hegarty donated nineteen Barbie dolls alongwith eleven children's bookmarks including one headed "Marine Biology: A Collection Of Shell Lore" written by Denise Hegarty This is only a small excerpt from our long history but it makes it clear thatmarine gift giving is not just about presenting something nice but also about showing appreciation for all that salt water has done for humanity!

Snyder is a town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2000 census. Snyder was founded in 1881 by Ohlone Indians and named after General James Fenton Snyder, who led the Union army during the Mexican-American War. The town began as a cattle settlement on the banks of Buffalo Bayou. In 1907 it became an agricultural town with a market and small store. It gained its current name of Snyder when oil wells were drilled there in 1923 and production increased the need for local identification markers such as "Snyder" on property deeds.
Snyder was founded in 1836 by Andrew Snyder and his brothers. The town grew rapidly because of the cattle drives that took place there. In 1849, Snyder included what is now Springdale in its boundaries. By 1870, the population had grown to over 1,000 people. Snyder was destroyed by a fire in 1907 and has never been rebuilt.
