Sherman was founded in 1879 by Sherman brothers, James and John. The town began as a cattle ranch on the southern edge of the present-day city of Sherman. By 1907, the town had grown to include a population of over 1,000 people. By 1928, Sherman had become an incorporated municipality. In 1938, its population reached 5,000 people and it became one of the first cities in Texas to be granted cityhood. In 1984, it amalgamated with surrounding towns to form the new City of Sherman.
