Sherman, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas that was founded by Americans Sherman and Laura Ingalls Wilder on November 15, 1881. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,811. Sherman is located in Midland County east of Austin. The name "Sherman" comes from Jesse James's Indian birthplace and namesake General David Sherman who fought in the Mexican–American War as a colonel and then served as United States Minister to Mexico City from 1848 to 1850. In 1907, when Midland County was created from parts of East Texas, Sherman became its first county seat. The town's first store opened in 1881 on Main Street and it soon became known for its flour mills which produced some of the early soybean products for local consumption and export to Europe. By 1890, there were also four schools in town - three rural schools (grades one through five)serving students from nearby farms while one high school (grades six through twelve) served residents throughout Midland County. The post office began operations in 1886 and continued operation until 1971 when it moved to Duncanville; however, mail service still arrives here today by way of helicopter courtesy of ExpressMail Aviation/Midland Helicopter Co., Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings Incorporated (RAH), which provides airmail services between Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Joint Airports (DFW-JAU) and midtown Houston via Midland Municipal Airport (MILAN). In 1916 during World War I Memorial Day ceremonies at Marshall Field's National Exhibition Hall downtown Chicago IL , then Postmaster General James Maney delivered an address paying tribute to American Generals John J Pershing & George Smedley with military honors including an open lawn salute before dinner at McCormick Place Chicago IL . The event was so well attended that following night President Wilson called upon Maney to come up with a plan for distributing munitions domestically without government restrictions overseas . A year later on July 4th 1916 Maney postage stamps were issued honoring American soldiers killed or missing in action during World War I On May 25th 1912 citizens voted 3-1 against annexation into Texas due to lack of education about it being done beforehand among other reasons

In 1850, the Sherman family sold their interest in the town to a group of men led by J. P. Morgan. The town became an important center for cattle ranching and timber production. In 1916, Sherman was merged with Palestine to form Palestine-Sherman County.
