The air force gift history in Seguin, Texas began with the arrival of the United States Air Force in 1947. The USAF established a base at Seguin after World War II and initially used it for training. In 1948, the USAF moved its headquarters to Midland and opened a wing here. The first unit assigned to Midland AFB was the 403rd Bomb Wing which arrived from Beale Air Force Base, California on May 15th, 1948. The wing was redesignated as the 527th Bomb Wing on October 3rd, 1948 and activated at Midland AFB. In 1952, the 527th Bomb Wing became one of four wings organizationally designated as Tactical Air Command's "First Wing". On November 8th of that year, President Harry S Truman announced that Tactical Air Command would be composed of five commands: First Attack Squadron (FAS) pilotless aircraft units; First Missile Brigade (FMBA) responsible for developing strategic missiles; Third Bomber Group (TBG) flying Boeing B-29 Superfortresses; Ninth AF responsible for providing fighter jets; and First Fighter Wing (FFW) flying Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes. On December 1st of that year, FAS became detached from TBG and assigned to FMBA instead. On January 25th, 1953 FMBA became operational with Republic A-4 Skyhawk jet fighters when it took delivery of its first aircraft from Ford Motor Company’s plant in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. In 1956 FMBA converted to McDonnell Douglas F2H Banshee jet fighters when it received its first batch of these planes from Raytheon Aircraft Corporation’s plant in Wichita Falls Texas. That same year also saw the arrival of Republic RB-47 Stratojet bombers at Midland AFB which were reassigned to FMBA as part of their conversion process into bombardment airplanes. In 1958 FMBA acquired an additional set of McDonnell Douglas Sabres from Boeing Aircraft Co., Wichita Kansas fame becoming Operational Training Unit–1 (OTU-1). There followed more conversions including RB-57E/F Hustlers into attack bombers while OTU-1 continued Its conversions into jet bomber units when they received their final batch of Douglas DC3Cs in 1959 and 1960 respectively becoming Operational Training Unit – 3 (OTU-3). On July 9th 1960 FAS transferred from TBG to FMBA effective immediately becoming one squadron under command with Headquarters at Midland AFB responsibility for all aspects military activities at Seguin AFB including Butte County Sheriffalties detachment which concurrently operated out OFUs adjacent to Seguin Airport until disbanding on September 30th 1961 due lack Of funds For such an operation combined With increasing costs associated With Cold War era arms controls Hostilities had shifted From Europe To Asia And Threatening New Weapons had been introduced Including ICBMs

In 1957, the USAF purchased a Lockheed P-2 Neptune reconnaissance airplane. This was the first of what would be known as the "Super Stallions". The Super Stallions were some of the most advanced aircraft in USAF service at that time. The Neptune had a modified fuselage with two large, high-mounted engines and could reach speeds of Mach 2.0. It was also widely used for maritime patrol and intelligence gathering missions.
