Schertz is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,605 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first settlement in Schertz was made by George Schertz on November 15, 1836. He and his family camped near what is now downtown Schertz on the banks of the Brazos River. On December 1, 1836, George Schertz erected a cabin and named it "Schertz." In 1840, he bought 82 acres (30 ha) of land from Isaac US Grant and built a sawmill which operated until 1865. In 1860, General Sam Houston called for volunteers to fight in the American Civil War; many people from Schertz joined the Confederate Army. After the war ended in 1865, most of the men who had served in the Union army returned home but some continued to work at the mill until 1870. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction period (1867-1877), much business activity took place in Schertz because white citizens were not allowed to own Negroes or vote without white permission. Some businesses such as grocery stores and hotels were founded while others failed due to economic limitations placed upon them by state government officials during this time period. In 1870, when African Americans were finally given voting rights within their OWN states through passage of federal legislation known as The Voting Rights Act of 1965 - Schertz experienced its first black mayor/councilman/member since Reconstruction when Elijah Epps became Mayor on January 1st 1969 after being elected Commissioner of Elections that November night - making him one of only two African Americans ever elected statewide in Texas during that era! A post office was established at Schertz on January 10th 1872 under name "Port Royal," later renamed "Schertz." On July 1st 1902, an act known as an act concerning school finance passed by both houses of Congress resulted in all public schools becoming open to students regardless of race or sex; Consequently increasing enrollment at various churches resultant into addition to new businesses opening up including a movie theater which opened its doors on October 7th 1912!
