Schertz is a small town in Medina County, Texas, about an hour's drive from Dallas. It was founded in 1881 by German immigrants and has been a center of military and paramilitary activity since the days of the Republic of Texas. In World War II, Schertz was the location of one of the largest concentration camps for Japanese Americans in the United States. The townspeople were acquitted after a protracted legal battle. The Town of Schertz was organized on November 3, 1875 from parts of White Settlement and Spring Branch communities east of present day Schertz. The town plat was filed on December 12, 1875 and recorded with the Dallas Land Records on January 12, 1876. On February 17, 1876 James Kappanen deed his interest to John Haggerty for $100 cashier's check which he had own share of what would become Schertz Township. On March 1st & 2nd 1865 a group led by Chas Ahern drove out Indian insurgents who had ambushed them while prospecting near present day Spring Branch Creek area west of town limits. They named their new settlement after General Sam Houston who they thought had saved their lives during the Mexican–American War when Mexico surrendered that year without battle or surrendering any captives In 1880 an election was held to select a post office site within township boundaries but no vote occurred as mail service from Dallas arrived too late for most residents to cast ballots In 1886 an election was held to select trustees for township schools but again no vote occurred as mail service from Dallas arrived too late for most residents to cast ballots On September 5th 1896 Mrs Gertrude Sprague donated land south of current day downtown streetwall off FM 1960 just west of US Highway 45 (now I-10) lot number 671 for use as a school district boundary line between Green Valley School District #1 and White Settlement School District #2
