Schertz, Texas is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–New Mexico metropolitan area and is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande. Schertz was founded in 1875 by German-American settlers from Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The name Schertz comes from a Dakota Sioux word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." In 1875, several German-Americans settlement near modern day Schertz founded what would become known as the Farmers National Bank and Trust Company. The bank grew rapidly and soon became one of Texan banking giants. The company built an extensive barn complex that still stands today including a library and a theater which opened in 1907. In 1916 it merged with First National Bank to form First American National Bank of Dallas – one of America's largest commercial banks until its acquisition by JP Morgan Chase & Co.. In 1933, during World War II, Schertz served as headquarters for Major General James Fenton’s 10th Army Corps (later renamed VIII Corps) stationed in California during hostilities against Japan. On July 7th 1941 General Fenton ordered all businesses within two miles (3 km) to close because of air raids Canadian Forces were conducting over Los Angeles; this order caused major problems for business owners who failed to comply due to their lack of air raid immunity certificates or other legal protection from censorship laws at that time. Following World War II ended in 1945 mass evacuations took place throughout most of North America as millions were displaced by war-time rationing techniques called "Operation Overlord". Many Germans living in Texas moved eastward into Missouri or Indiana once war ended but some continued to live in Texas until after the end of Redistributionaloktion (the post-war redistribution process). As many as 1/5th (or even less) of all Texans had permanent residence outside the state between 1940 and 1950 when state lines were redrawn following the admission into Congress districts won by southern Democrats during those years.
