Schertz, Texas is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, located on the Mexican border. It has a population of about 1,500 people and is home to one of the most significant coffee roasters in the United States. The coffee industry in Schertz began during the early 1800s when Mexicans started moving into what is now Hidalgo County. In 1836, three men from Mexico City named José Antonio Larrea, Francisco Javier Garza and Manuel Gomez founded La Sociedad de la Verdad Coffee Club in Schertz. This was the first coffee cooperative in America. Larrea had started importing beans from Europe while working for a Spanish-owned coffee plantation near San Antonio. When he discovered that his plantations were running low on beans, he decided to start exporting his own beans to America instead. He imported two tons of Starbucks beans per week at $2 per pound (which at that time was a very high price). Larrea allowed his friends and family to help him start up his business and soon enough La Sociedad de la Verdad Coffee Club was became one of the most famous and well-respected coffee roasters in America. The early years of La Sociedad de la Verdad Coffee Club were very difficult as they didn't have any money or resources to buy any equipment or seeds. However, they did manage to produce some beautiful cups of Joe which are still enjoyed by many today. They also managed to get some good recognition for their cupcakes which were often served at social events such as dances or weddings. In 1906, Larrea passed away but his legacy lives on through La Sociedad de la Verdad Coffee Club which continues to produce amazing cupcakes today!
