In 2014, Schertz became an official city in Archer County. Schertz was founded on December 12, 1879 by John Schertz and his family from Germany. By the end of 1880, Schertz had outgrown its original location and moved to a new site near present-day Highway 6 and Old Highway 506. In 1907, local businessman Willis Hargrave donated land to build what is now downtown Schertz. Hargrave's donation allowed for the construction of several businesses which thrived until they were closed or converted into housing after World War II: The Bank of America building (1907), Armoury Theatre (1911–12), IHOP restaurant (. 1945) and Shell station (. 1978). One noteworthy development which occurred during this time period was the construction of Sherwood Drive which led from Main Street north toSherwood Park Boulevard today's airport property before terminating at State Road 6 about two miles east of downtown Schertz proper.
