Schertz is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. Schertz is located on the White Sands Missile Range. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Schertz" comes from German settlers who named it meaning "place where crows gather." In 1881, a post office was established in Schertz and remained in operation until 1916. The community took its name from John H. Schertz, an entrepreneur who developed a cotton gin in the early 1900s and prospered as a landowner and tobacco farmer. Other businesses built around Schertz during its early years included a school (1892), grocery store (1910), bakery (1915), hotel (1920), water tower (1925/26), and several churches including First Presbyterian Church (1896) and Methodist Episcopal Church of Schertz (1920). In 1926, construction began on what would become tornado alley south of town due to concerns about potential damage caused by severe weather events such as tornadoes. This area now includes much of Enterprise Township and parts of Plano Township before converging near I-35E to form present day Schertz Boulevard. As time passed, more businesses moved into downtown Schertz while less activity occurred in the alley; this left downtown with few residents or businesses during major storms like Harvey or Irma when they struck the town center directly. However, recent development has seen some new business arrivals as well as growth in property values Downtown which can be seen through increased traffic congestion caused by people trying to get to their properties during extreme weather events like Harvey or Irma As one of the smallest communities within Williamson County by population size when it first became incorporated in 1907 - with just over 600 residents - Schertz experienced rapid growth over ensuing decades thanks to various partnerships formed between local government officials, entrepreneurs and business owners – most notably John Hirschbeck’s Cotton Gin Company which manufactured cotton goods for many local stores throughout Williamson County until it shuttered its doors for good in 1978 – making way for Interstate 35W bypassing nearby Plano - becoming one of only a handful of independent towns remaining within Williamson County after that route was completed two decades later Today's economy largely depends on military spending given how close Fort Worth is to the missile range which provides both recreational opportunities for locals as well as employment opportunities for those living near Perry Barr Air Force Base . Schertz is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Schertz was James Burchard who arrived in 1836 from Maryland. He started a post office in 1837 and named it Cerro Gordo after his ranch near Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1840, Wm. A. Schertz bought land from Burchard and founded the town on what is now Main Street. By 1845, Schertz had a church and school with about 25 residents and seven businesses including a grocery store and blacksmith shop. The town lost its civic rights to be incorporated when it failed to surpass $5 per capita tax levied by the county courthouse commissioners in 1851-52 but regained them when statehood was granted to Texas on November 12, 1865 In 1870 Schertz had 507 residents; by 1880 it had grown to 1,027 with 166 businesses including several banks In 1915 the community's only factory closed due to overproduction of aviation gasoline used for military purposes during World War I In 1925 Schertz became an independent city within Hidalgo County On March 20th 1960 Schertz voters passed an ordinance giving citizens the right to vote by secret ballot for mayor/council members as well as all other municipal offices On January 3rd 1961 Mayor/Council member Robert Lovell resigned following news that he had been caught up in Internal Revenue Service (IRS) bribery investigations
