As this fort became more important, other settlements began to be founded around it including Pueblo del Rio Bravo on or near the river's edge and Socorro on or near what is now US-505. In 1840, when Franciscan missionaries started arriving in New Mexico they brought with them Christianity which changed many lives. One of these priests, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla erected a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe at Plaza de Mayo across from modern day El Paso/Tijuana border crossing. This event helped startettlement growth westward into what would become Taos County and northward into Los Alamos County. On July 6, 1850 José Joaquín Arguelles founded Alamo Rancho Viejo east of present day Albuquerque along US-64 about halfway between Albuquerque and Gallup
