Santa Fe is a city in and the county seat of Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 871 at the 2010 census. Santa Fe is located on the Rio Grande River and has a total area of 362 square miles (818 km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Fe were traders travelling up the river from Zacatecas in Mexico City. They named their new town after Saint Nicholas, who had visited their region in around 400 AD. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the trade route between New Spain and Mexico City. By 1836, Santa Fe had a population of 5,000 people. In 1845, it became part of Mexico when that country unified with Spanish America under Francisco Villa's rule. In 1912–1913, $3 million was set aside by Austin philanthropist James Bailey to be invested in educational institutions throughout Southwestern United States as part of his Bailey-Griffin System program; this money would grow into University Park Graduate School (later UT Austin) and eventually lead to Baylor University being founded just north of downtown Saint Pauls Plaza in 1928. Although small by today’s standards, at that time downtown included such well-known landmarks as Brown’s Hotel ($3400 sq ft [$], built 1888), Masonic Temple ($2200 sq ft [$]), First National Bank Building ($) (built 1892), Porter jail ($) (built 1907), El Paso County Courthouse ($) (completed 1913/14), State Capitol building ($) ($620 sq ft [$], completed 1914)), Depot Square area (), El Paso Creamery District (), San Angelo Chinese Language Monument (), Alamo Plaza Shopping Center (). The downtown core was also home to some important Santo Domingo Mission-owned land including Christoval Adobe property (. . .) which later became Parkland Mall mall/. On July 19th 1920 an act known as "An Act To Annex Topeka County" was passed by both houses of the Texas legislature annexing Topeka County without any local vote or consent from either side resulting from Kansas statehood movement spearheaded by territorial Governor John Fetterman that year On November 4th 1920 Topeka County proclaimed itself an independent Republic governed by a Board Of Commissioners chaired by Judge Augustus Cadwallader Kenney

Santa Fe is located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Rio Grande River. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1767 as part of the Mexican province of Veracruz. Santa Fe became a republic in 1821 and an independent nation in 1912. In 1916, Santa Fe incorporated as a municipality, and it became an incorporated city in 1966. As of the 2010 census, its population was 853,903. In 1767, Spanish colonists arrived in what is now Santa Fe to establish a fur trading post on the lower Rio Grande River. Santa Fe, Texas was founded in 1846 by Captain Juan Francisco de Oñate as a military post on the Rio Grande. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had become the capital of New Mexico. Santa Fe was one of the key cities in the Mexican-American War, and during its occupation by American forces (1867-1870) many important people died or were injured. After the war, Santa Fe became an agricultural center with a large cotton crop. In 1912, the city built its first public library, which remains operational today.
