Santa Fe is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 756 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Fe County and home to the University of New Mexico. The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1598 as an agricultural center on the east bank of the Rio Grande. Santa Fe quickly became a major manufacturing town, and from 1881 until its annexation by Albuquerque in 1912 it was one of three cities in New Mexico that were not part of the Mexican Republic under Article II, Section 2 (the others being Alamogordo and Las Cruces). In 1907–1910, when President Theodore Roosevelt visited New Mexico he made Christmas present to Santa Fe residents a proclamation ordering all businesses closed on December 25th so they could install new lights within two weeks.
