Santa Fe, Texas is a small city in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The population was 9,514 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in Bernalillo County and one of the fastest-growing communities in New Mexico. Santa Fe has been called "the most vibrant city on the Plains" by Forbes Magazine. The first European to visit Santa Fe was Nicolás de Oviedo on November 15, 1614. Pedro de Alvarado led an expedition through what is now Albuquerque and Santa Fe in 1617 hoping to find new routes to California for Spain. Spanish colonists founded three missions—San Francisco Xavier (founded 1736), San Juan Bautista (founded 1769), and Nuestra Señora del Carmen (founded 1785)—and built churches, hospitals, mills, and other infrastructure around them. A United States military post was established at Fort Taylor near present-day Albuquerque in 1810 during Mexican–American War hostilities between America and Mexico over claims to land south of the Rio Grande River that lay within current New Mexico Territory but whichMexico claimed as part of itsespatial territory along with all of Central America including El Salvador and parts of Guatemala and Honduras. The fortress served as a base for American troops who skirmished with Mexican forces intermittently until 1847 when it was abandoned due to lack of funds for upkeep; however American presence continued until 1898 when USA gained independence from Spain following their war with that empire. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson appointed Juana de la Cruz as governor of New Mexico based on her Appeal for Citizenship whichriganized voting rights for Native Americans living west of Mexico City. Her policies helped spur economic development in New Mexico and led to increased involvement by Ulysses S Grant in American Indian affairs
