In 1886, General Hugh O'Neill took command of Mexican forces occupying Texas and ordered them to retreat from SantaFe. As part of this order, General O'Neill destroyed much of the fortifications around the town. As a result, few people survived the siege and most of what remains of downtownSantaFe is today just an old warehouse complex known as "the Fort." On July 4th 1912, two days after General O'Neill's surrender at Battleship Porter in Galveston Bayou near Houston Heights,, citizensofSantaFe gathered in frontofthenewkingsbridgeinAustinfora picnic which is still celebrated every year on that date..
