In 1948, Don Brazile founded Brazile's Restaurant & Coffee House which served both local residents and tourists with its unique atmosphere. From 1968 until his death in 1993, Don Brazile was one of the most influential figures inSantaFe's coffee industry. He helped start several new coffeehouses including The French Press Club (1980), The Java Joint (1981), The Pioneer Place (1983), The Roastery (1985) and finally The Mexican Café (1996).Throughout his career, Don Brazile was an advocate for quality beans, education for java lovers worldwide,and providing social services to those who needed it most. Santa Fe is a small city in the Texas Panhandle, about 150 miles (240 km) east of Austin. The population was 17,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first European to settle in what is now Santa Fe was Dutchman Hendrick Corstiaensen in 1607 AD. He named his new land Fort de Santiago after Santiago de Cuba, then an Spanish colony. The first European to visit Santa Fe was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado on February 15, 1614. From here he explored much of North and South America before returning to Spain in November that year with reports of valuable gold and silver mines near Zacatecas, Mexico. In 1618 another Englishman, John Clapperton, set out from England with three horses and 500 acres (20 ha) of grants from Governor Diego Mendoza to explore this region but returned empty-handed within two months due to lack of supplies and other interests south of the Rio Grande River yet unspoiled by Spanish exploration or settlement at that time.
