On December 7, 1942, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Santa Fe, Texas in response to the United Kingdom's air campaign in Europe. The gift was an air force Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. The bomber had been donated by General Electric and flown into Santa Fe from Wichita Falls, Texas on December 3rd. It arrived at the airport on December 5th and was examined by Rear Admiral Robert Loomis who gave it a ceremonial rollout before its first flight. Upon its arrival, it was put into storage at the airport until it could be delivered to Santa Fe for use as part of Operation Crossroads. On January 4th 1943, Crossroads began with Operation Torch and involved RAF bombers flying over North Africa to drop supplies and troops to help drive Axis forces out of that region. The bombers were also used for bombing targets in Spanish Sahara during the same time period. The bomber arrived in Santa Fe on January 22nd and underwent final assembly before being delivered to OPERATION CROSSROADS on February 6th. There it participated in bombing campaigns against German positions along the Mexican border until May 8th when it returned home with personnel and cargo back to Wichita Falls. When OPERATION OVERLORD began on April 10th 1944, CROSSROADS became direct action operations targeting Nazi troop concentrations within Italy using Boeing B-24 Liberators from Midway Island off Japan as well as other American planes stationed there. From then until September 2nd 1945 when V-E Day occurred, the bomber flew missions over Normandy carrying supplies and reinforcements backto America for what would be one of history's largest aerial evacuations ever carried out (at that point only Britain had undertaken such a large scale operation).

Today, downtownSantaFe retains many of its historical buildings and cultural attractions including Mission San Miguel de Allende Mexican Methodist Church dating back to 1835 where Revilio Rivera preached his last sermon before he was martyred for protesting religious discrimination against Native Americans; Plaza Mayor which features 12 panels depicting Mexican history starting with Mexica rule over Texcoco until independence in 1821; Andaz Hotel which opened in 1912 featuring some of the first air conditioning systems in America; as well as El Paso Museum Center which has displays on Mesoamerican culture including examples of jewelry, ceramics, artesanal fabrics and pottery from around central Mexico
