San Marcos, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Austin County. As of 2010, it had a population of 96,711. The city is located in the Travis County metropolitan area, which has a population of 2 million people. The name "San Marcos" comes from Spanish for "a place where there are palm trees." The first European to visit San Marcos was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 25, 1795. He named the site Santa Clara del Campo after his patron saint and found some ruins at what is now downtown San Marcos that may have been an early mission or chapel. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded Alamo House as a ranch house near what is now I-35 South and Guadalupe Street. In 1837 he sold part of it to Sam Houston who moved it to its present location in 1839 near what is now Main Street and University Avenue. On July 8, 1870, Houston signed an affidavit naming San Marcos as the new county seat when Austin became one consolidated government with 12 counties including Travis County under one administration system following passage by the Texas legislature of an act creating county seats within each newly created district courthouse organization based on population size rather than geographical distance from capital cities: The original Courthouse building burned down on December 11th 1865 but was replaced by a new structure erected in 1868 which still stands today (pictured below)

San Marcos, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. The population was 20,516 at the 2010 census. The city was founded by Anglo-Mexican settlers in 1836 as San Miguel de Allende and named for Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which lies just to the east on a bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The name Allende comes from Nahuatl meaning "place where there are trees." The City's original mission was to establish a seminary for Mexican missions in what is now Austin, but construction began only after Mexican independence from Spain was achieved in 1821. The first post office called San Marcos was established in 1836, and its first mayor was José Antonio Urquiza y Figueroa. In 1851 San Marcos became an independent republic under General Antonio López de Santa Anna when Mexico became an American nation following its independence from Spain. As part of Texan Independence movements during this time period, San Marcos opposed annexation by Mexico and boycotted most major American events such as elections. As part of organized resistance against Ulysses S. Grant's occupation during the Mexican–American War (1867-1868), members of the town militias skirmished with Union troops at Palo Alto Creek near present day Austin on November 16, 1867—the last significant engagement between Texans and federal forces before they withdrew northward into exile two years later at Appomattox Court House). In 1898 San Marcos seceded from Texas to form Alamo Heights within Hudspeth County; it remains one of four municipalities that have formally seceded from any country or state in United States history (alongside Utah Territory (1912), Nevada Territory (1916) and Arizona Republic ( 1912)). After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, many Japanese Americans were exiled back to Japan including several hundred residents who had settled in San Marcos since prior to Pearl Harbor; however most Japanese Americans returned home after 1945 when America reopened its doors to all citizens regardless race or national origin as required by law under President Harry Truman's Executive Order 9066 decreeing end all discrimination against Japanese Americans based on their citizenry status rather thanRace/National Origin). The town of San Marcos was founded in 1867 by James F. Richardson, a landowner and politician who served as governor of Texas from 1872 to 1874. The town grew quickly, becoming an important commercial center with its own rivers and wells. San Marcos became the capital of Texas in 1907 and was home to the state's first government building, the Capitol Building. In 1916, San Marcos was renamed Austin after former Governor William Hance Austin.
