The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum in San Marcos, Texas is a repository of the history of Marines and their deployment gifts. The museum began as an offshoot of the Marine Barracks Museum in Quantico, Virginia in 1990. The San Marcos area was first settled by the Caddo Indians in the late 18th century. The Spanish Presidio of San Marcos was founded in 1769, and became a U.S. military post in 1821. In 1845, Mexico acquired California from Spain and set up its own government there, but the presidio continued to be used by Americans until it was abandoned in 1870. After Mexicanindependence was achieved in 1912, American citizens began to arrive here, and the name "San Marcos" came to be applied to this entire region. The military post served as a center for tracking Chinese traders through much of Texas during World War II, and portions of the original Presidio still remain today as part of the Army's Fort Bliss complex.
